Inspiration
An app like Untappd but for something not alcohol related — cafes and coffee culture. Untappd lets beer enthusiasts check in and rate beers; Overpourd does the same for coffee lovers.
What it does
Overpourd is a social coffee discovery app that lets coffee enthusiasts:
- Check in at local cafes and log what they're drinking
- Share experiences with friends and the community
- Discover new coffee spots via an interactive map with cafe locations
- Browse events happening at cafes (like the Outdoor Market)
- Track stats — see your check-in count, favorite drinks, and favorite cafes
- Connect socially through a friend feed and group features
How we built it
Frontend: React 18 + Vite + React Router for fast, modern UI with smooth navigation Backend: Express.js + MongoDB Atlas for data persistence and API endpoints Mapping: Leaflet + react-leaflet for interactive cafe discovery map with real coordinates Styling: Tailwind CSS with a warm cream and sage color palette API Communication: Axios for all backend requests
Challenges we ran into
Map white screen crash — Cafes had no coordinates; users opening the map would see a blank page Solution: Created a seed script to add lat/lng to all cafes and added fallback error handling
What's next for Overpourd
User authentication — Sign up, login, and persistent user sessions Friend system — Accept/reject friend requests, see friend activity in real-time Group features — Create groups, invite friends, group-specific check-ins and discussions Push notifications — Alert users when friends check in nearby Cloud deployment — Deploy to production (Heroku, Render, or Azure) Advanced filtering — Search cafes by rating, distance, drink type Social features — Comments on check-ins, drink recommendations, badges/achievements
