OverDrive

OverDrive is an AI-powered career copilot designed to help people move from “I’m interested in this role” to “I’m ready to apply and interview.”

Most career tools stop at keyword matching or generic resume generation. OverDrive treats the job search as an end-to-end workflow: discovering strong-fit opportunities, understanding each organization’s culture, tailoring a resume truthfully, preparing personalized outreach, and practicing for demanding interviews.

Inspiration

We were inspired by how difficult it is to personalize a serious job search. A candidate may need to research dozens of companies, compare role requirements, rewrite the same resume repeatedly, find the right person to contact, coordinate schedules, and prepare for very different interview styles.

The problem is not a lack of information. It is the difficulty of turning information into focused, honest action.

OverDrive brings those steps into one workflow while keeping the candidate’s real experience at the center.

What it does

OverDrive has four connected modules:

  • Discover: recommends companies, research labs, investors, and roles based on interests, work style, company size, technical domains, and priorities.
  • Chameleon CV: parses a resume and creates target-specific versions while showing the original bullet, tailored bullet, keywords, technical framing, and rationale.
  • Outreach: prepares applications, research-lab emails, and coffee-chat requests with personalized hooks and scheduling options.
  • Interview Arena: creates target-specific mock interviews with technical, behavioral, cultural, and founder questions, then gives structured feedback.

The system is designed to avoid fabricated accomplishments. It distinguishes between verified experience, inferred fit, missing evidence, and placeholders that still need to be completed.

How we built it

We built the experience as a React application with a responsive interface, local persistence, modular workflow state, and browser-based resume processing.

The demo includes:

  • Target recommendation logic
  • Resume parsing for PDF, DOCX, and text files
  • Keyword and culture matching
  • Resume section reordering
  • Before-and-after resume diffs
  • Target-specific outreach generation
  • Calendar-link generation
  • Mock interview flows
  • Speech recognition and text-to-speech when supported by the browser
  • Local fallback behavior when external AI or backend services are unavailable

The architecture is intentionally designed to support a future orchestration layer that connects verified personal context, web research, calendars, email, and interview feedback.

What we learned

We learned that a useful career agent should not simply produce more text. It should help users make better decisions.

The strongest experience came from showing the reasoning behind each recommendation: why a target fits, which skills are actually evidenced, which resume bullets were changed, and what remains uncertain.

We also learned that trust is essential. A polished resume is not useful if it exaggerates experience, invents metrics, or claims that an email was sent when it was only drafted. For that reason, OverDrive emphasizes transparency, source grounding, and explicit user control.

Challenges

The biggest challenge was balancing personalization with honesty. The system needs to adapt language to a company or role without inventing experience that the candidate does not have.

Another challenge was building a useful fallback experience. External services may be unavailable, browser speech APIs may differ, and users may not have connected their resume, calendar, or email yet. OverDrive therefore provides local, copy-ready outputs and clearly identifies where live integrations would improve the result.

What's next

Future versions could add:

  • Verified Google Drive context synchronization
  • Live company and research-paper recon
  • Real calendar availability
  • Gmail draft staging
  • Backend-powered interviewer feedback
  • Stronger source citations
  • Multi-target outreach tracking
  • More detailed analytics on applications and interview performance

OverDrive’s goal is to make career exploration feel less like a collection of disconnected tasks and more like a focused, evidence-based operating system for ambitious work.
