We set out to make a framework for playing boardgames on a massive scale by projecting the playing-field onto the real world and placing game pieces via GPS. Outsyde (www.outsy.de) is the first iteration---allowing two people to play a competitive game of Othello on a 400 x 400m grid projected over Oxford's campus.
We have a Java backed that controls the game-state and an Apache Server running PHP to communicate with our Javascript front-end that employs the Google Maps API.
Our biggest challenges involved making all three of these elements work together seamlessly, and to effectively get the user's GPS location via their browser. We decided to make outsy.de a web app rather than a native app to accommodate deployment across platforms.
