Inspiration

We were interested in looking at creating something for social good. and after our brainstorm session Outdoorsie was created. Inspired by the current heat wave in the southern part of the United States we wanted to make a tool people can use to determine if they want to go outside.

What it does

The user inputs their current city or a city they are interested in and Outdoorsie gathers longitude and latitude information of the city in order to return a city's current air quality index (Air Quality Index is on a 1-5 scale with 1 being good air quality and 5 being very poor air quality) and UV index. The site displays current air quality index and uv index along with a message to the user about if they need to take some precautions going outside.

How we built it

Uses openweathermap, Here APIs, javascript for outdoor data and messages that are displayed to the user, html and css for responsive web design. We also used repl for code collaboration, canva for our logo and favicon as well as figma for figuring out an early prototype.

Challenges we ran into

The time crunch was a bit of a challenge we needed to work through. Due to a previously scheduled commitment during the hackathon weekend time management was really important and helped figure out how our prototype should work. Also, there were some features we were interested in implementing such as getting the current bug report at the user's location - I wasn't able to find a suitable API during this weekend, but it's something we're thinking about adding in the future.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Crislana: I proud of being able to have a working project that uses APIs. This was my personal goal for the hackathon and I'm happy with how it turned out.

Astrid: My goal for this weekend was to focus on getting more familiar with HTML/CSS

What we learned

It was our first time working as a team so we definitely learned how to collaborate as a team, how to brainstorm, and create team project goals/project schedule. And that APIs are awesome!!!!

What's next for Outdoorsie: An Outdoor Tracker

Implementing a bug report for the user's current location and also pollen count are features we're interested in adding to Outdoorsie. I think these would be helpful features for people (especially those with seasonal allergies) who want to plan out their time outdoors better!
