Inspiration

When I first heard the theme "outbreak", I immediately thought of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is still deeply affecting many people's lives. I wanted to create a monster that was similar to the virus.

Idea

There are evil cubes and nice cubes, the goal of the game is for the nice cube (player) to defeat a big splitting evil cube. Thus, the splitting and multiplying evil is similar to how the virus keeps spreading. There are also safe zones protected by other nice cubes which the evil cube cannot enter.

How I built it

I used unity as a game engine, and designed my models using blender. I also used krita to draw the textures for the models. The trees/rocks/archway are from bitgem and music is from freesound.

Challenges I ran into

Since I'm completely new to making games, I had no idea how anything worked at first. I had to watch so so so many youtube videos :(. I kept getting errors on my codes, but because I'm also new to using C# (the only language I really know is python), it took me really long to figure out how to fix each one. I also had a bug where the player cube could "fly" because pressing space would allow it to keep jumping even in air. Finally, I tried using echoar originally for my models, however I was using the free version rather than the offered business version, and then I ran out of API calls.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Considering I never used unity, blender, EchoAR, or C# before this hackathon, I'm very proud of myself for learning all of them to a usable extent in just a couple days. I was also proud when my the face for my texture FINALLY faced the correct direction on the cube.

What I learned

I learned how to use unity, blender, EchoAR, and C# :).

What's next for OutBreak

I would like to make the other nice cubes in the safe zone npcs that the player cube can recruit to help in the battle. I also want to create a few different levels of difficulty, such as a paranoia version where everything is dark except a small area around the player.
