Inspiration
I wanted to build a game where you play on an arcade machine. I had a vision for how the game looked that everything built off of.
What it does
Out of Order is a game built in Godot Engine, featuring immersive pixel art and roguelike elements as the player attempts to reach the high score. The game is a platformer, but the wildcard is that the machine with which you play the platformer is acting up. The player scavenges their pocket for coins, pulling out a vast variety of multipliers on their score, that often come with negative side effects when inserted into the machine.
How we built it
I coded it alone in Godot, and drew all pixel art myself. I sourced and edited sound effects from royalty-free sources. I used Google AI Studio's Experimental Flash 2.0 to brainstorm initial ideas and solidify my plan.
Challenges we ran into
Numerical balance of this game has been particularly difficult. There's a timer the player is racing against, as well as multipliers on their score that they want to accrue in order to reach a max score. The main challenge, though, was managing my energy levels in producing this. I decided to stay up to ensure the game gets done, but that sacrifices a lot of efficiency and pleasure in the process.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The coin effect system was built to be very expandable, which allowed me to implement a variety of effects in a fairly short time. The art turned out well and matched my vision for how the game should feel.
What we learned
It's more important to take breaks than to power through at a slow pace. Tortoise and the Hare kind of thing
What's next for Out of Order
Playtesting to finetune numbers, more level designs and coin effects, etc.
