We wanted to build a layer over openhab (an open source home automation solution) so that we could extend it's abilities with webhooks for services such as YO! and huginn (opensouce IFTTT-like product). A dashboard was designed to display useful information for the residence. This information includes presence (who's home), detected by devices on the network, mpd controls for a music server, the weather for the day and laundry status (controlled by nfc tags to call out to web hooks). Other features include the ability to model the apartment in canvas.
