Our Happy Space

Inspiration

The negative news is everywhere and easy to find. Yes, problems should be exposed so they can be fixed but what about all of the great things going on currently? Our Happy Space is built to encourage people to find positivity in the world and give them something to look forward to after reading the news. It uses sentiment to analyze and filter negative news articles from News data provided by the News API.

What it does

We use the News API to scrape the news, then we apply sentiment analysis to find out how mood pleasing the news is. Our homepage shows the users the most recent positive news. We also have a search option that lets them search for any topic and show them the positive news which is then followed by the generalized ones.

We also have a switch-mode that lets them turn back into normal mode and show them all the latest happenings.

How we built it

The frontend is built using ReactJS, integrated with a backend made up of Nodejs, Express which accounts for the sentiment analysis done behind the scenes.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we ran into is while ideating for more than half of the night, all the ideas were already taken up.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of building as in the current world of negativity, this has an impact that could make somebody happy which is priceless.

What we learned

We learned the art of Sentiment Analysis and how it could be implemented to render viable articles.

What's next for Our Happy Space

We plan to make https://OurHappy.Space bigger by adding features that make the user's interaction with the website even more enjoyable by implementing a personalized touch where they will be shown the articles based on what they liked previously and occasionally showing them something out of their comfort zone to help them grow.
