Inspiration
My inspiration came from my mom. She has a garden in her background and always tries to help the environment. She reuses sink water to use for her plants and insists on taking shorter showers. This has also helped me be aware of how much water I am using and how long my showers are. This caused me to think that other people should also be aware of our environment and how to improve it.
What it does
My project is an app called Our World. There are many different levels and tasks to complete to become an official enviornmentalist. This app is specifically designed to help people take action to help the environment by small tasks. Once you get to task 10 you will move on to the next level.
How I built it
I built this app by using the app developer site called Glitch. I chose this site because it was one of the developer sites that the mentors recommended, which made me more comfortable with it. I followed the instructions given in the example, then I remixed the example and started my app. Whenever I was confused I would either ask one of the mentors or use Glitch Support. Which would answer already asked questions.
Challenges I ran into
I ran into many problems during this hackathon. One of them was that I used to have a team, but none of them would respond to my messages on slack. Then one of the mentors helped me, and because of the lack of communication on the other end, I had not known that one of the team members wanted to work alone and the other team member would not respond to anyone. I was quite stressed, but the mentors helped me greatly and I am thankful. I managed to use the rest of my time wisely and finish my project as I wanted.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am very proud that I got to participate in a hackathon and I will continue to do so in the future. I had a great experience and learned a lot of coding. I am proud that I got to write HTML coding because before this hackathon I did not even know what HTML coding was! I am also proud of my app. Even though it is not finished, I learned many functions and the basics of the HTML language.
What I learned
I learned many things during this hackathon and even though I may not win, I have gained much experience. The workshops were a great help for my project and I had fun learning how to code. I learned HTML coding and a little bit more about the python language. I am very thankful for the people who hosted this hackathon and the workshops. I will further use this experience in coding in the future!
What's next for Our World
There are many things that I have not finished for my app. I want the users to interact with each other with a live scoreboard and add points every time a task is finished. I also want to add a feed after the game is finished people can trade plants and talk about different ways they help the environment. I want to add chats, likes, posts, comments, and a web feed.
