Inspiration
I was inspired to build this website when I was watching a video on dinosaurs and how they may have looked like. I felt sad that I could never experience those majestic beasts. I realized that people coming after us may think of the animals of today in the same way. So I felt that I wanted to do something about so many animals going extinct and to help our ecosystem I built Our Roomies.
What it does
Our Roomies is a website that creates and raises awareness about animals that have gone extinct or those that are endangered and can still be saved. In this way, it is a medium for people to educate themselves and help them put efforts towards saving endangered animals.
How I built it
I built the website using Velo by Wix. It is a full stack development platform based on JavaScript. I used various APIs built into Velo to create cool animations, visuals and user interactions on the site. All of this was coded using JavaScript and Velo's framework.
Challenges I ran into
The greatest challenge was familiarising myself with Velo's Documentation and the way it works in such a short amount of time. I was able to grasp the basics of Velo and use it to create the interactions on the website. Another challenge was not being able to find proper guidance or solutions while using Velo.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I learnt how to use a completely new full stack development tool in just two days and was able to make a website out of it. I'm proud of the animations and interactions I built using Velo.
What I learned
I learnt the basics of Velo like its Animation API, event handlers, functions like hide and show. I also learned about using JavaScript integrated with Wix to quickly deploy powerful websites.
What's next for Our Roomies
I plan to expand Our Roomies to a database of animals all around the world and not just three regions. I want it to update in real time showing people about the numbers of animals and where they can be found. I also wanna add resources so people can donate to causes helping animals directly and thus helping our ecosystem.
