Inspiration

OurKitchen was inspired by our teammate’s own experience in attending a college 2000 miles away from home. Pittsburgh was so different from the sunny Los Angeles she was from, and the sudden change had affected her deeply. Lost in her bubble of home-sickness, cooking Korean dishes was her only reprieve from the academic and social stress that had become constant in her life. The results were mediocre, even "below-par", but the familiar routine and taste were incredibly precious.

We hope to become the “bridge” in reestablishing and connecting individuals, families, and cultures all across the world. Cooking forges new and existing connections, and especially during these recent stressful times, it may even become a relaxing break. We also aim to make our project as accessible and inclusive as possible, focusing on easier recipes, taking into consideration various allergies and dietary restrictions, and the cost, so that everyone will be able to create diverse, home-cooked meals.

What it does

OurKitchen allows users to upload and share their own family recipes through the upload recipe form. In addition, users have access to new recipes uploaded by other users, and can filter through them using the sidebar. Users can select time restraints, difficulty levels, and dietary restrictions.

How we built it

OurKitchen was built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript on the IDE Replit. In addition, we used Figma for our wireframe and procreate for our background art.

Challenges we ran into

Our team ran into some technical issues during the development of this website. Although the recipes would upload onto the website, this data was not being shared across all users. However, this was an invaluable learning experience that allowed us to realize where we could improve, and we would like to take this opportunity to showcase the future potential of our project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of being able to work efficiently in an online setting. Our teamwork and communication were the foundation of OurKitchen. In addition, the recipe upload form came out as expected, and it was a great technical accomplishment of ours.

What we learned

While researching for sample recipes to put on the website, we learned a lot about various cuisines and gained interest in some foods we had never heard of in the past. We hope that this is an experience that many users will be able to relate to while using our website.

What's next for Our Kitchen

OurKitchen hopes to expand its accessibility by making the application responsive across mobile dimensions. Although it is currently responsive for web dimensions, we believe that if we expanded to mobile users, our goals of connecting individuals will be more successful. In addition, we hope to integrate a web storage system in order to make our website self-sufficient.
