Inspiration

Clothing is a necessity of everyday life. The fashion/clothing industry is one of the biggest industries in the world. So it's often that many tend to overlook the impact it has on our society and environment, especially that of fast fashion- an industry that encourages throwaway culture and excessive consumerism.

What it does

"Our Capsule Closet" is a website that aims to help inform and spread awareness on the social impacts of fast fashion. It's a pretty concise website, with an introduction on the homepage, a slideshow of statistics, and areas were you can donate to organizations that campaign for a more accountable and clean fashion industry.

How we built it

I built my website purely with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I started out by building the frame of the website in HTML, then separating each of my webpages into different files. Working in each HTML, CSS, and JS file, I gradually built my website. HTML was the base, CSS was the decoration, and JS served as functionality. Many of the resources used in my website were from Google and properly sourced in the "About" page. In terms of brainstorming and thinking of ideas, I did everything on paper.

Challenges we ran into

I think the biggest challenge was working alone and in a time constraint. I usually code leisurely, so joining a hackathon for the first time was able to help me pump out ideas and create them during an assigned period, which could be useful when working under a deadline. Working alone came to be difficult as well- although I could code around my own schedule, sometimes I felt as if I didn't leave as much of an impact on my code. Luckily, I was able to work around any problems I faced and turn my project in on time!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm glad that my website looks clean and everything in it functions smoothly. I am also proud that my entire website was built with HTML/CSS/JavaScript and that I was able to work through multiple files.

What we learned

I learned a lot more about JavaScript than I thought I would, especially to make certain elements, such as the slideshow, function correctly. I usually build my websites solely out of HTML/CSS, but this time I wanted to add some functionality, so I'm pretty satisfied that I tried out more JavaScript. It also ended up being pretty fun, which was great.

What's next for Our Capsule Closet

Future iterations for "Our Capsule Closet" would include adding a search bar to a dataset of shops and their sustainability rankings, or a map API to donation centers closest to the user.
