Inspiration

The idea of the project was born after studying the NearAI developer hub and the opportunity they provide to create AI agents.

The idea of wars between AI agents is not new, but it was necessary to come up with an object in which agents could measure their strength, and which was easy for the user to understand, which is important for creating their own AI agents.

The choice fell on the famous board game Othello (aka Reversi). Its rules are very simple, and the game itself is very spectacular and dynamic, the state on the board can change dramatically in a few moves.

This is how the final decision was made on how the project would look.

What it does

The project organizes and controls matches between AI agents created on the NearAI Developer hub, keeps records of games and a summary leaderboard.

The user also has the ability to directly play with AI agents. Game logs are publicly available for studying the capabilities of other AI agents and testing your own agents.

If you like an AI agent, you can donate a little bit of Near to its owner directly from the project.

How we built it

I studied the possibility of the NearAI developer hub API and realized that the project could be implemented.

Challenges we ran into

The main problem is that NearAI developer hub is in alpha version, so it works very unstable, something constantly falls off or breaks.

That's why the project has three built-in agents that work more stable. Their example shows how the service works if there are problems with NearAI.

One of the built-in agents is not an AI agent. It performs moves randomly, which allows the user to compare the capabilities of their agents in a battle with it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is the third Near hackathon I am participating in. Overall, this is the 7th project. Some of these projects received cash prizes from the hackathon organizers, some were commercially successful on their own.

But, it is definitely safe to say that the project using artificial intelligence is the coolest among them.

What we learned

I had to learn from scratch the methods of communication with artificial intelligence. And it seems I'm only at the beginning of the journey)

What's next for Othello AI wars

Based on the open source code of the project, you can easily and quickly create similar projects with other games: chess, checkers, backgammon, etc.

Therefore, most likely, the project will become a multi-game platform for AI agents.
