Inspiration
The holiday season is a time for gifting, but we wanted to create a unique experience that combines the holiday spirit with giving to a meaningful cause. Inspired by the spirit of generosity and the trend of donating to causes instead of exchanging physical gifts, we created OrnaMission. Our goal was to combine holiday cheer with a platform that allows users to raise awareness and donations for causes they’re passionate about. This is perfect for birthdays, holidays, or any special occasion where users want to celebrate by giving back.
What it does
OrnaMission allows users to decorate a virtual Christmas tree with ornaments representing various charitable organizations. Users can select ornaments tied to categories like healthcare, animal welfare, or education, and arrange them on their tree to create a personalized display. Once their tree is decorated, they can share a link with friends and family, who can view the decorated tree and make donations to the represented charities instead of giving physical gifts.
How we built it
We built OrnaMission using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the core structure and interactivity. We used GitHub for version control and collaboration, and VS Code as our primary text editor. Holiday-themed music was also added to enhance the festive atmosphere.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into some technical difficulties with implementing the feature for placing ornaments on the tree. Additionally, challenges encountered when integrating front-end design with back-end logic required some creative problem-solving.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team successfully implemented an interactive decorating experience that’s accessible for users of all ages. We’re also proud of learning how to collaborate effectively as beginners to bring OrnaMission to life.
What we learned
We gained hands-on experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as using Figma for design and GitHub for version control. We also learned how to manage project scope, especially on setting achievable goals.
What's next for OrnaMission
We envision expanding OrnaMission for other occasions, allowing users to decorate for a variety of meaningful events. For example, we could incorporate a "Bouquet Customization" feature for Mother's Day, where users could select flowers representing different causes and create a bouquet to share with loved ones. We hope to make OrnaMission a year-round platform, helping people celebrate special moments with personalized, charitable giving.
