Inspiration

Modern supply chains are increasingly vulnerable to geopolitical conflicts, extreme weather, cyber threats, port congestion, and market volatility. Organizations often rely on fragmented data sources, making it difficult to identify risks early and make informed decisions. We built ORION to unify global operational intelligence into a single AI-powered platform that transforms real-time data into actionable insights, helping organizations anticipate disruptions rather than simply react to them.

What it does

ORION (Operational Risk Intelligence & Optimization Network) is an AI-powered operational intelligence platform designed to monitor, analyze, and optimize global supply chain resilience.

The platform aggregates live data from multiple trusted sources, including shipping activity, weather events, energy markets, geopolitical developments, infrastructure, and economic indicators. ORION continuously evaluates these signals to detect potential disruptions, calculate operational risk, and generate AI-driven recommendations.

Key capabilities include:

  • Real-time global intelligence dashboard
  • Supply chain risk monitoring
  • Shipping lane and maritime tracking
  • Energy market intelligence
  • Geopolitical event monitoring
  • AI-generated operational insights
  • Risk scoring and disruption analysis
  • Interactive maps and visualization
  • Decision-support recommendations

How we built it

ORION was built as a modern cloud-native web application with scalability and real-time intelligence in mind.

Our stack includes:

  • React + TypeScript for the frontend
  • Vite for high-performance development
  • Serverless APIs for data processing
  • Convex for realtime backend services
  • Redis caching for high-speed data retrieval
  • AI models for insight generation and risk analysis
  • Interactive mapping and visualization
  • Multiple external APIs providing real-time operational intelligence

The platform continuously ingests live data, processes it through analytical pipelines, and presents decision-ready insights through an intuitive dashboard.

Challenges we ran into

Building ORION required solving several complex engineering challenges.

  • Integrating numerous external APIs with different formats and update frequencies.
  • Managing large volumes of real-time data efficiently.
  • Designing a unified operational risk model across diverse domains.
  • Creating a dashboard that remains intuitive despite presenting extensive information.
  • Ensuring low-latency performance while aggregating data from multiple global sources.
  • Balancing technical depth with an interface that supports quick decision-making.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a platform that brings together multiple domains of operational intelligence into a single unified ecosystem.

Highlights include:

  • Unified monitoring across numerous global data sources.
  • AI-generated operational recommendations.
  • Comprehensive global risk visualization.
  • Modular architecture designed for future expansion.
  • Interactive dashboards that simplify complex operational data.
  • A scalable foundation capable of supporting enterprise-scale intelligence workflows.

What we learned

This project strengthened our understanding of large-scale system design, real-time data engineering, AI-assisted decision support, cloud deployment, and user experience design.

Beyond technical skills, we learned the importance of transforming massive amounts of data into information that decision-makers can quickly understand and act upon.

What's next for ORION

Our vision is to evolve ORION into a comprehensive AI-powered decision intelligence platform.

Future enhancements include:

  • Predictive disruption forecasting using machine learning.
  • Automated supply chain optimization recommendations.
  • Digital twin simulations for "what-if" scenario planning.
  • Enterprise collaboration and alert management.
  • Explainable AI for transparent decision-making.
  • Expanded integrations with logistics, transportation, and enterprise resource planning systems.
  • Multi-language support and global deployment.
  • Advanced optimization models for resilient and sustainable supply chain operations.
