Inspiration

Media tracking is broken. Cinema lives on Letterboxd, anime on MyAnimeList, books on Goodreads, and manga across forgotten browser tabs. Recommendations in each silo ignore the others.

Worse, modern platforms drown users in infinite scroll. After an exhausting workday, nobody wants to spend 45 minutes jumping between six apps just to pick something to watch or read. Throw in a partner or a group of friends with completely conflicting tastes, and decision fatigue turns into total deadlock.

We built Orgi to eliminate this friction: a unified, dark-themed discovery hub where Movies, Series, Anime, Manga, Manhwa, Manhua, and Literature live together—engineered to take you from exhausted indecision to enjoying great content in under 30 seconds.

What makes Orgi different

  • Cures Real-World Decision Fatigue (Orgi Picks): Most platforms exacerbate choice overload with infinite carousels. Orgi asks for your mood, time budget, and social context (Solo, Partner, Friends, or Family)—instantly breaking group deadlocks and delivering exactly three high-confidence recommendations.
  • Cross-Medium Taste Convergence: Cultural taste doesn't stop at format boundaries. A love for psychological thrillers like Shutter Island should logically recommend an anime like Monster or a manhwa like Bastard. Orgi connects recommendations across cinema, TV, webtoons, and literature rather than trapping users inside a single medium.
  • Orgi Quick Verdict (Powered by Google Gemini): Replaces vague promotional blurbs with a structured AI decision matrix: a punchy one-phrase summary, why you’ll love it, why you might skip it, and specific content watch-outs so you can decide instantly.
  • Unified Centralization: Browse, log, rate, and manage your entire backlog—Hollywood films, ongoing manhwa, classic novels, and bingeable TV series—in one distraction-free obsidian dark interface (#000000 / #0B0B0B).
  • Frictionless Hybrid Sync & Community: Start logging immediately with offline-first guest collections that automatically merge to Supabase upon sign-in, paired with an interactive community feed featuring markdown reviews, rating sliders, and spoiler shields.

How we built it

  • Frontend: React with Vite, styled with Tailwind CSS, Lucide icons, and responsive fluid motion transitions.
  • Backend: Node.js and Express REST API architecture with modular controllers and resilient rate-limit handling.
  • Database & Authentication: Supabase (PostgreSQL) with Row-Level Security (RLS) and OAuth session management.
  • AI & Intelligence: Google Gemini API for real-time editorial critiques, narrative analysis, and personalized recommendation verdicts.
  • APIs & Data Ingestion:
  • TMDB API: Multi-endpoint discovery and media metadata for movies and series.
  • MangaDex API: High-resolution cover artwork, tag-based taxonomy, and live Bayesian rating calculations.
  • Open Library API: Subject search and book edition catalogs for novels and literature.

  • Caching & Performance: Upstash Redis with a multi-tiered in-memory and REST cache layer to maintain ultra-fast sub-50ms response times and prevent upstream API rate limits.

Challenges we ran into

  • Harmonizing Incompatible Schemas: TMDB, MangaDex, and Open Library each use vastly different data models, tag taxonomies, and rating scales. Reconciling MangaDex’s UUID tag IDs, TMDB’s separate numeric movie/TV genre systems, and Open Library’s subject strings into a single cohesive UI required custom normalization pipelines.
  • API Rate Limiting & Strict Filters: MangaDex queries default to strict boolean AND tag matching, which initially caused complex multi-vibe searches to return 0 results. We re-engineered the discovery service to leverage OR modes with layered fallback queries and cached Bayesian statistics in Redis.
  • Guest-to-User State Merging: Ensuring users could start saving titles without friction as guests, and then cleanly reconciling their local state with their cloud collection upon authentication without duplicates or data loss.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • The "Pick for Me" Experience: Designing a smooth flow that avoids overwhelming users with endless grids, delivering 3 highly curated picks tailored down to specific formats like Manhwa or Live-Action TV.
  • Speed & Responsiveness: Achieving near-instantaneous page transitions across millions of titles by implementing smart multi-tier client and Redis caching.
  • Cohesive Design Identity: Building an immersive visual experience that feels premium, distraction-free, and respectful of both film lovers and avid readers.

What we learned

  • How to design AI prompts that generate genuinely useful, concise cultural commentary rather than generic marketing summaries.
  • Advanced API query optimization across third-party providers with disparate rate limits and pagination mechanisms.
  • Building resilient user interfaces that gracefully handle network latency and missing metadata without degrading the visual experience.

What's next for Orgi

  • Social Taste Feeds & Friend Activity: Follow friends and trusted curators to see their latest logs, reviews, and custom lists in a chronological feed.
  • Custom Curated Stacks: Allow users to build shareable media collections (e.g., "Cyberpunk Aesthetics Across Film & Manga").
  • Streaming & Reading Platform Availability: Direct links showing where a movie or series is streaming locally, or where an official book translation can be read.
  • Mobile Companion App: React Native mobile version with barcode/ISBN scanning for physical book logging.
