Inspiration
Every nine minutes another person is added to the organ transplant list, while seventeen others die everyday due to a lack of access. The inspiration behind OrganTrack stems from the desire to address the profound racial and socioeconomic inequities that exist within the current organ donation ecosystem. For too long, marginalized communities have faced barriers to transplantation, with higher representation on waitlists but lower rates of receiving donor organs. OrganTrack aims to "ethicalize" the dynamics across this ecosystem by uplifting equity as an actionable principle.
What it does
OrganTrack is a comprehensive, real-time Organ Tracking and Transportation System that integrates cutting-edge technologies like GPS tracking, sensor networks, and secure data transmission to revolutionize how organs are monitored and transported during the transplant process. Key features include:
Real-time tracking and monitoring of organ shipments, environmental factors affecting organ viability Advanced AI algorithms to mitigate racial disparities and ensure medically optimal, equitable organ matching
Secure data transmission and blockchain integration for transparent, tamper-proof record-keeping
AI-powered predictive analytics to anticipate potential risks and suggest mitigation strategies
Customized alerts and risk mitigation strategies for stakeholders
Integration with hospital information systems and electronic health records
How I built it
The OrganTrack platform employs a robust technology stack, including:
Internet of Things (IoT) enabled sensors for continuous monitoring of environmental conditions
Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies for real-time location tracking
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning models for predictive analytics, risk identification, and fair organ matching
Blockchain technology for secure, immutable data storage and transparent record-keeping
Secure APIs for seamless integration with hospital IT systems, electronic health records, and regulatory bodies
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges was addressing the ethical complexities and data challenges associated with integrating AI into organ transplantation systems. Overcoming these hurdles required collaboration among healthcare, research, and tech sectors to address ethical concerns, improve data accessibility, and streamline regulations for responsible AI implementation in organ transplantation.
Accomplishments that I’m proud of
I am proud to have developed a solution that directly addresses the fragmentation, inequality, opacity, and absent governance challenges that have long plagued the organ donation infrastructure. Our centralized platform, with its ethical AI framework, embedded oversight mechanisms, and radical transparency, works to rebuild lost confidence in the system on ethical grounds.
What I learned
Through this project, I learned the importance of collaboration between different sectors and stakeholders when tackling complex healthcare challenges. I also gained a deeper understanding of the ethical implications of AI in high-stakes domains like organ transplantation and the need for rigorous safeguards to prevent perpetuating biases.
What's next for OrganTrack
Moving forward, I plan to continue refining our algorithms and expanding our partnerships with healthcare providers, research institutions, and regulatory bodies. I also aim to explore the potential for scaling our solution to a global level, leveraging our ethical AI framework to address organ donation inequities worldwide. Additionally, I will focus on further integrating our platform with emerging technologies, such as advanced robotics and autonomous transportation, to continuously improve the efficiency and reliability of organ transportation.
