Inspiration
Climate change has been in our headlines for a long time, especially recently, so, coupled with the fact that Earth Day is coming up, we wanted to create a project that was centered on sustainability. We combined entertainment with education to create a game that would help people learn to make small, yet significant changes in their everyday lives.
What it does
The program is a game that is run using a GUI. The user can read the instructions and then start the game, where they have to choose the color of the bin that each trash item presented is supposed to go into. They should aim to be as fast and as accurate as possible, since a high score is kept record of based on those qualities.
How we built it
We created multiple classes, including to create a GUI, GameWindow, a data model class, as well as the logic for the program. We coded in Java and collaborated across various platforms in order to create the project. We also uploaded a multitude of photos to display with the items.
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble creating a GUI and changing between panels since we didn't have much experience with them. However, with a lot of research, discussion, and trial-and-error, we were able to use our individual strengths to create a collective, comprehensive project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our quick-learning, which helped us create the program together over the course of only two days. More specifically, we're especially proud of how we were able to learn to adjust buttons and fonts, as well as add photos to a GUI.
What we learned
We learned about how to distribute a workload while also working together when collaborating on a coding project. Additionally, we gained useful coding skills, such as becoming more fluent with handling GUIs and implementing logic onto them.
What's next for Organize & Recycle Your Trash!
This game can be made more extensive with more items and features, such as a countdown timer or allowing players to be made to keep track of scores long-term. The program could also be made into a website or more extensive application, which would also have its own graphics/backgrounds.
