Inspiration

In recent times, there has been a surge in tropical storms, prompting us to focus on Miami residents within our consumer segment. The project, named "Orca," was conceived when we realized that more accurate live data could have potentially reduced injuries during the hurricane that struck Acapulco, Mexico. We saw the need for a system that would provide timely alerts to residents, especially those who may not see or hear approaching storms. Thus, we developed "Orca" – an innovative invention designed to deliver real-time weather information in a fun and interactive way.

What it does & How we built it

"Orca" is our startup business plan, aiming to create a medical invention that also serves as a decorative piece for residents of Miami, Florida, particularly those who are medically impaired. Through meticulous data analysis spanning 2016 to 2022, utilizing reliable data from the Florida State database, we identified Miami as a region experiencing frequent rainfall, making it susceptible to hurricanes. Our invention is designed to enhance hurricane preparedness, especially during periods of high precipitation, as observed in 2016 and 2020.

Challenges we ran into & Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our journey was marked by a significant challenge – our team's limited coding experience. As complete beginners, we grappled with the basics of coding, often facing issues related to syntax errors and program execution. However, our background in business provided valuable insights. With dedication and the aid of online resources, we overcame these obstacles, successfully configuring an Arduino to bring our idea to life and utilizing data to support our mission of aiding a state frequently affected by hurricanes and providing assistance to residents in need.
