We created our project to help women find jobs that are tailored to their needs. Even as women keep making progress, we still face challenges at work. Some of these issues are having to work our way up in a male-dominated industry or careers, balancing work and family and finding an inclusive and accepting environment.

What it does

After registering, members can browse recommendations for jobs like they would for any other job search website. What differentiates us from other job boards is how members can filter the results.

The badges are designed to tailor women’s needs specifically. In just one view, members can see which jobs are remote so they can work from home. Or they can find companies where management and executive positions are gender-balanced. Members can also find companies that are friendly to LGBT and gender non-binary workers.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we faced was having to integrate everything we built with different programming languages, libraries and apps into a single product. We overcame this challenge by learning on the job - listening to each other, getting help from our mentors and picking up a lot of new skills on the spot.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

In just 24 hours, we created a prototype for an app, a webpage and a search algorithm that we think can really help women in their job search. We hope that this will help women find a job that fits their needs and keep making progress.

What we learned

We all learned how to better work and communicate with a team which was a challenge remotely. We also all added new skills and programming languages to our skillset and improved upon current skills.

What's next for Orca

If we had more time, one thing that would have been added is a more personalized registration process for new members. On top of providing their usual information, they can share their concerns. Maybe they are full-time moms wanting to go back to work. Maybe they are working moms looking for more flexible jobs. Or maybe they want to find a workplace where they feel accepted for who they are.

Another feature is the ability for members to network and have more control of the website content. In the future, we would like to add a direct messaging feature as a way for members to interact with each other and build their network.
