Inspiration

As a group of high school and university students, we know the struggles of getting internships and landing interviews. This project initially was inspired to democratize the ability for job seekers to create a conversational resume, however, it has expanded to other areas from talking to our early adopters.

What it does

Once users register and login into their free account, they can input resume data into their profile, such as work experience or past achievements WITHOUT worrying about perfection. OrbitView will then generate a clear and suitable resume for a specific job application, which can be exported as a JSON, PDF, or LaTeX file. Users also have the recommended option to open their newly generated resume in Overleaf thanks to our extensive integration.

There are different activities, whether they are events, competitions, or programs that will help a user to cultivate a better resume and boost their career potential. OrbitView offers a semantic search where users describe the kind of opportunity are seeking and it will match it with them. In addition, they can view it in a 'Tinder-like' swipe feature, where the user can swipe left or right on an activity that they find interesting.

Lastly, with each person's master resume, OrbitView offers "Astro", an AI layers that can summarize, analyze, or answer questions about your resume instantly.

How we built it

We built OrbitView using Django (Python web framework), Next.js, ChatGPT API, MySQL, PythonAnywhere, numerous frontend libraries, etc.

Challenges we ran into

During our time attempting to build the Overleaf integration, we continuously ran into issues but in the end, we were able to successfully integrate it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to integrate Jake's resume and Overleaf with our product. This makes it 10x easier and faster to write resumes. For the previous 2 months of this startup, users were forced to download a .txt file and then manually had to copy it into an Overleaf project. Our new feature eliminated the friction of doing so.

In addition, we were able to allow users to generate resumes for different job descriptions which maximizes their chances of getting an interview or offer.

What we learned

-During this hackathon, we dramatically improved out product using the Overleaf API. So that is something we learned. -As we talked to users, most of them emphasized the need for a frictionless export to LaTex, in particular, to their Overleaf account. We were able to develop a solution to it, but it is a pain point that we need to continuously improve our solution upon

What's next for OrbitView

-Use Linkedin's third-party API to let OrbitView apply with your application automatically -Improve cybersecurity infrastructure -Improve backend robustness through more rigorous testing -Cache data to minimize backend requests and the toll on the infrastructure

  • Give users the ability to connect and message others -Scale infrastructure to ensure the servers don't crash and increasing usage capacity -Launch mobile app to reach a wider audience -Continue to launch pilots at institutions in Canada and the US
