Inspiration
57% of students experience the feeling of not having adequate guidance or social support in their lives. Our team felt that mentorship was a great solution to combat this. However, current mentorship platforms are not without their problems. In our research, we found that many students experienced difficulty in finding a mentor - whether in general, or due to a mismatch of expectations and interests. With Orbit, we hoped to push an example of what online mentorship could be like - a platform that uplifts diverse voices, is tailored to one’s interests, guided, and aims to instill long term peer-to-peer mentorship habits in students.
What it does
Orbit is a personal dashboard and social platform with an AI-powered system that recommends matches users in mentor-mentee pairings based on their expectations, interests, and special skills. In Orbit, users can get matched to compatible mentor/mentees, chat with them with the aid of with generated conversation prompts, schedule meeting reminders, and view AI-generated insight reports of their conversations with their mentor/mentee connections.
How we built it
In the given time, we used MongoDB to create the database for Orbit, as well as the Cohere API to implement the matching system. We used Figma to design the interface, and Next.js to implement the front end.
Challenges we ran into
We really struggled with the scoping of the project. We were too ambitious with the number of features that we needed to implement without thorough prior thought. For example, we had planned for a chat feature but, having little experience, were unable to implement it. Additionally, only one of us had some experience with React, and with time running out + the backend still incomplete, it was too short of a time to manage the front end and the merge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Implementing a new API and using what was available from it to use for our objectives
- Learning more about designing components in next.js
- Designing for different layouts and creating branding that we are proud of
What we learned
- To aim to do one thing thoroughly instead of working on a broad scope
What's next for Orbit
Given more time, we would have:
- Implemented the chat feature
- Implemented the user matching feature
- Implementing the summarise feature
- Having responsive design
Built With
- cohere
- figma
- mongodb
- nextjs
- tailwindcss
