Inspiration

The Veritasium video that explains the concept of "6 degrees of separation": that any two people have 6 or fewer connections linking them together.

What it does

Uses a Chrome extension that scrapes LinkedIn for your connections and mutuals, along with looking at posts and people who comment on them as third-degree connections, and saves them into our web app's database and presents them visually as a knowledge graph map.

How we built it

We used ChatGPT Codex to assist us with the backend, linking us with the Sites service and the D1 database that's included with it. Along with this, we built a Manifest V3 Chrome extension through node, which is what places the data into the sites database and creates the DOM. The frontend was built with vite, packaging the pges and the chrome extension together.

Challenges we ran into

We initially didn't have a super strong idea of the archetiture and framework so we let Chat GPT Codex create the design however we hit a roadbump where it just couldn't scrape LinkedIn and opted for Google Contacts as an alternative. So we had to completely scrap the code and wipe the GitHub repo and start over.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We made it work. We were able to pivot and pick up a second win after the first loss and still complete our project. This idea was incredbly complex and we were able to execute a working webapp. The UI was also visually appealing which is nice.

What we learned

We learned the development workflow by going from just a brainstormed idea to full deployment online. We also had to learn how to communicate heavily with each other. So many things were being worked on and we had to make sure not to develop things that overlapped or contradicted each other's work.

What's next for Orbit

Make the job and field search more efficient and faster. Currently, it can search through the bios of LinkedIn profiles to find relevant key words or companies however we plan to scan through the entire profile to look at all of a person's work experience.
