Inspiration

Campus life is full of opportunities like events, clubs, and workshops, but students often feel overwhelmed or miss out because information is scattered across calendars, emails, and social media. We wanted to create a way for students to discover events effortlessly and enjoyably, making it feel personalized and engaging.

What it does

Orbit is an AI-powered campus discovery platform that curates events, clubs, and activities based on student interests. It combines data from the Comet Calendar and other campus sources, then uses AI to recommend events tailored to each student, even analyzing event descriptions for tone, intensity, and relevance. The interface turns events into “planets” in a galaxy, making browsing intuitive, fun, and immersive.

How we built it

React + Tailwind CSS for a responsive, space-themed frontend Framer Motion for smooth galaxy-style animations Nebula API + OpenAI GPT models for event text analysis and personalized recommendations Vercel for deployment and hosting

Challenges we ran into

Data integration- pulling events from multiple sources (Comet Calendar, club pages) and keeping them up to date. Event filtering accuracy- ensuring AI didn’t misclassify or suggest irrelevant events.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Created a fully integrated AI + calendar system that recommends relevant campus events. Developed a unique space-themed UX that makes event discovery fun and interactive.

What we learned

While building Orbit, we learned how to integrate the Nebula API with AI models to process and analyze event data. This helped us understand how APIs can be used to pull structured information and combine it with AI to generate smarter recommendations. We also gained experience connecting backend data processing with a responsive frontend, ensuring the AI insights translated into a smooth and interactive user experience.

What's next for Orbit

Next, we want to expand Orbit by integrating more campus platforms and real-time event updates. We also plan to improve the AI recommendation engine by incorporating attendance patterns. In the future, Orbit could include social features, letting students see which events their friends are attending and build shared campus experiences.
