Inspiration - This project was inspired by an important problem we noticed in physical therapy: many patients struggle to perform their exercises correctly and consistently after they leave the clinic. Even when given clear instructions, it’s easy to forget proper form or unknowingly make small mistakes that can slow recovery or even cause further injury. We wanted to create a solution that could act like a “virtual physical therapist,” giving patients immediate feedback and guidance while they do their exercises at home. Our solution is Optivision.

What it does- OptiVision is a website that implements Augmented Reality to track a patient’s movements while they are exercising, to give them real time feedback on how they are performing. If the patient is doing an exercise wrong they will be notified and corrected. OptiVision will also keep track of how many reps the patient is completing and let them know when they are done with the recommended exercises.

Challenges we ran into - One of the biggest challenges we faced was accurately detecting and analyzing human movement in real time. Small variations in angles, lighting, and camera positioning made it difficult to ensure consistent results. Another challenge was balancing accuracy with usability. We needed the system to be precise enough to be helpful, but also fast and simple enough to run smoothly. Additionally, ensuring that the feedback was clear and not overwhelming for users required careful design and testing

What's next for OptiVision - Through building this project, we learned how critical real-time feedback is in improving both accuracy and consistency. We also gained a deeper understanding of how technology, especially computer vision and mobile development, can be used in healthcare settings. Beyond technical skills, we learned the importance of designing something that is simple and intuitive for users, since patients of all ages and abilities would need to interact with the app easily.

Overall, this project showed us how technology can bridge gaps in healthcare by improving accessibility, accountability, and outcomes. It reinforced our interests in building solutions that combine innovation with real-world impact, especially in areas where better tools can directly improve people’s quality of life.
