Inspiration
Bridges and other infrastructure are typically inspected on fixed schedules, leaving long periods where deterioration can develop between visits. We wanted to explore whether a low-cost optical node could monitor a surface automatically and flag meaningful changes as they occur.
What we built
OPTIS is a solar-powered structural health monitoring node combining RGB and thermal imaging with edge AI. It detects and tracks defects such as cracks and corrosion, processes data locally, and transmits only relevant defect evidence rather than continuous raw imagery.
How we built it
We combine RGB and thermal sensing, edge processing, solar power, and wireless communication with a computer-vision pipeline for defect detection, localization, measurement, and tracking over time.
