Inspiration
Being a new mother, 3 months postpartum, I could have never prepared for my own personal experience. I have always heard about postpartum depression, but I did not realize how difficult this period of time could be. My own experience has led me to thinking about others and how difficult this period of time is for groups of women who are underserved and face health disparities.
What it does
Racial and ethnic disparities in postpartum mental health care refer to the unequal access and quality of mental health services available to women of different racial and ethnic backgrounds, especially in vulnerable communities. An app that allows women to regularly check in on their mental health with focus of providing personalized support resources will allow more understanding of the kinds of support women seek. Leveraging the power of technology with this app can greatly improve access, engagement and outcomes in postpartum mental health care for underserved women as well as their children, by mitigating possible effects of systemic inequality.
