Our idea is simple: we want to make you financially secure.

Imagine the industry you are working in is performing poorly. As a result you are fired. The future income you thought you were going to earn, known as human capital, is now uncertain. You are looking for another job, but realize that none of your competitors are hiring. This makes you wish that you had taken some precaution against this risk earlier.

What it does

This is where Optimata comes in. Many robo-investors, such as Wealthfront and Hedgeable, minimize the risk in your existing investments, known as financial capital. None of them, however, protect you against the risk of your human capital. Remember that human capital is the future salary you are going to earn.

This is a huge market opportunity. Everyone would love to have some insurance against pitfalls in both their careers and investments. We want to be the first ever provider of such insurance.

How we built it

Our system is built on a node.js server hosted on an Amazon EC2 instance. The statistical model is built on Python which polls a MySQL and MongoDB database for stock and income information. The Python script then runs the regression and outputs the result to the node.js sever that presents it to the user using AngularJS.

Challenges we ran into

Sourcing income data was the toughest part. We had to ensure data sufficiency and reliability on an individual-level instead of aggregated levels. We also had to devote significant time making the application compute recommendations quickly so users would be satisfied.

Building a scalable application that fills a void in existing investment services.

What we learned

We learned the current state of personalized services - their strengths and shortfalls. We also learnt how to apply statistical models on Python.
