Inspiration

My family and I immigrated to Canada when I was at the small age of 7. The key contrast I recall during that time when compared to now is the open, welcoming, and opportunity-fulfilled image that was portrayed and provided to me and my parents that made me fall in love with this country. Yet today, the image seems like the complete opposite. Individuals arguing how Canada has too many immigrants that it is unable to support, whereas others state there aren’t enough. As an immigrant myself, I find it hurtful and heartbreaking that others are unable to experience the same Canadian friendliness I was welcomed to simply due to a lack of opportunities. To solve this, I created Opportunate.

What it does

I applied the usage of a data pipeline, gemini API, and engineered twelve columns and a "Canadian Opportunity Index" to help immigrants considering moving to Canada find the best locations for them to reside in.

How we built it

This was built through gathering raw data from Statistics Canada and then merging it through data handling. Finally, I created my own columns through the ones I found to create my own weightage system.

Challenges we ran into

My primary challenge was being able to manipulate the data and combining the multiple datasets and finding an equal method of creating the Canadian Opportunity Index.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I feel very accomplished knowing I was able to manipulate data and extract information out of it that I can present.

What we learned

I was able to learn how to implement APIs, use Flask, and manage data for real-life scenarios.

What's next for Opportunate : Immigrate To Opportunities

The next goal is to make this website live and host it so that it can truly be accessible to individuals hoping to immigrate to Canada from around the world.
