Inspiration

Often, the largest barrier between women and the technology industry is a lack of social and institutional accessibility. OpenWIT is here to change that.

What it does

OpenWIT connects women in technology from around the globe in events and projects, allowing them to connect and collaborate. It is highly accessible to women of all ages and skill levels, and focuses on the social reform of moving the technology industry over to an evenly distributed demographic.

How we built it

The web is the home of modern technology, with browsers and mobile devices as the most used portals. We built OpenWIT with a Node.js server and webapp, and an Android mobile applications. Growing the functionality of all three components side by side allowed us to create robust functionality that works across all devices.

Challenges we ran into

Creating an application that can scale to a large user-base involves an immense amount of care and cooperation between individual system components. Creating the android app to behave properly with the server's persistence structures was possibly the most difficult part of the app's creation. Also, taking functionality that is simple in a browser and migrating to Android also presents a number of challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is an app that is truly out to make a better world, and it has the potential to grow to epic, and impactful proportions.

What we learned

Software can be the medium for incredible, positive change.

What's next for OpenWIT

Perhaps finish the app, move it into production, and change the world.
