About the Project

Open Health is my vision for a more accessible, transparent, and empowering healthcare experience. I set out to build an AI-powered, open-source platform that helps patients, providers, and innovators make sense of healthcare data, find affordable care, and navigate insurance with confidence—all through a modern, user-friendly interface.

What Inspired Me

The inspiration for Open Health came from my own frustrations and those of people close to me. I've seen firsthand how confusing and overwhelming it can be to access medical records, understand insurance plans, or even find reliable information about symptoms and treatments. I wanted to create a tool that would put control back in the hands of users and make healthcare feel less intimidating.

How I Built It

I built Open Health using a modern tech stack:

  • Frontend: React and TypeScript for a robust, maintainable codebase.
  • UI/UX: Framer Motion for smooth, engaging animations.
  • Backend & Auth: Supabase for authentication and real-time data.
  • Deployment: Netlify for fast, reliable hosting.
  • Rapid Prototyping: Bolt.new, which made it easy to iterate quickly and collaborate.

Some of the features I'm most proud of include:

  • An AI-powered symptom checker and drug interaction explorer.
  • Data visualizations for genomic and clinical data.
  • Tools for analyzing insurance plans and estimating costs.
  • A clean, accessible interface that works on any device.

What I Learned

This project taught me a lot about integrating multiple APIs and data sources, and the importance of designing for accessibility—especially in healthcare. I learned how to leverage modern tools like Bolt.new and Supabase to speed up development, and how to present complex data in a way that's clear and actionable for everyone.

Challenges I Faced

There were definitely challenges along the way! Navigating healthcare data standards and privacy requirements was a big one. I also had to ensure secure authentication for different user roles, and balance adding powerful features with keeping the UI simple and intuitive. Connecting custom domains and troubleshooting deployment issues took some persistence, too.

Looking Back

I'm proud of how far Open Health has come in a short time. It's more than just a hackathon project. It's a step toward making healthcare technology more open and user-friendly. I hope it inspires others to keep pushing for innovation in this space.

P.S.

The links at the below of my landing page are all projects that I have built as well and I feel would be best shared in a website like this as it fits the open source healthcare initiative quite well. All of these are free as well. However, the Alzheimer's prediction does not work currently as I can not afford to keep up with the Google Cloud bill. Web development is incredibly expensive and is why I tried to make openhealth.site as accessible as possible. Most of the operations are done directly in browser which pose no risk of data leakage for the user, and creates way less computational overhead for a website. The only data kept in house is the synthetic EHR data generation which allows the user to go back and keep working with it after quitting a session. This project is the culmination of everything that I have done for the past few years, and is is my imperative initiative that the healthcare space sees a dramatic shift in the way that they view data and collaboration as a whole. I hope that anyone checking out my site can gain a little appreciation for the way in which data, collaboration, and a little bit of grace can have a drastic impact on the health and humanity of the world.

Thank you for reading my story and considering Open Health!
