Inspiration

Professors often tell students that their doors are always open. However, from our experience as students, we know that office hours are sometimes unreliable, and students can easily become confused about when and where to meet their professors. This was shown by how we once had to wait three hours for a professor to show up due to miscommunication. OpenDoor aims to solve this problem by creating a simplistic user interface to organize office hours while facilitating communication between students and faculty, because life is often unpredictable, and things don't always go as planned.

What it does

OpenDoor has two types of settings, one for students and one for professors. On the student side of the application, users can easily save and favourite professors and TAs to their home page. From there, the professor's availability and office location can be seen. It's even possible to see if the professor is currently with another student. The check in button automatically updates the professor's status across all users in order to avoid those awkward situations where you walk into another student's meeting. Finally, an updating announcement box will display important notifications from teachers.

On the professor's side, the user can intuitively change and see their office hours, make announcements, and check in/out of their office. With a minimalistic approach to UI design, this process is extremely quick for professors and lets them save more time for their important research.
