Inspiration

Many market vendors in Nigeria struggle with limited access to electricity, making it difficult to run appliances, charge devices, or operate in the heat. We wanted to create a solution that provides clean, reliable energy while also offering shade and comfort.

What it does

Oorun Shade is a solar-powered fabric shade designed for market stalls. It provides shade from the sun, generates electricity to power small devices and appliances, and improves the overall working conditions for vendors.

How we built it

We combined lightweight, weather-resistant fabric with flexible solar panels and a small battery system. The design is modular and portable, allowing vendors to easily set up, disassemble, and transport the shade daily.

Challenges we ran into

Designing a durable, weather-resistant solar fabric for hot, dusty markets; ensuring enough power for devices while keeping it portable and affordable; creating reliable, low-maintenance panels and encouraging local adoption.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created a functional prototype that provides shade, powers small devices, and is portable for daily market use. Vendors can now operate more efficiently, with access to sustainable energy.

What we learned

We gained insight into designing for harsh environments, balancing energy efficiency with affordability, and the importance of user education and adoption in technology solutions for informal markets.

What's next for Oorun Shade

We plan to improve energy output, explore larger-scale production, integrate more durable solar materials, and expand outreach to more markets to increase adoption and impact.
