Inspiration
In the last few months, COVID-19 has become a global pandemic that has affected millions. With social distancing, it has become difficult to find ways to help the vulnerable without endangering each other. In these uncertain times, it is extremely difficult for the vulnerable and homeless and they need assistance and support more than ever. How may we have a positive impact of helping others while still practicing social distancing and isolation?
What it does
Onus is a webapp that informs users on how to assist those who are most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic through donations and volunteering. By using your location, Onus will curate various charities and organizations in need of resources and assistance. For item donations, a thorough step by step guide will demonstrate accepted items and non-accepted items and how to prepare them. Finally, through the selected organization, users can schedule delivery and pick-up of the donated items.
The purpose of Onus is to highlight our own responsibilities as citizens to assist those in need, especially in times of great uncertainty.
How we built it
Onus was built using HTML/CSS and JavaScript.
Challenges I ran into
We ran into some issues with merging branches and having the changes update on the live website.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We're proud to have created an application that could potentially guide people towards a tangible way to help those in need.
What I learned
We used Github collaboratively for the first time, learning how to push, pull and merge our branches. We also learned quite a bit from researching the current situation that many of Toronto’s homeless population are facing and the struggles that have come up because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
What's next for Onus
Onus could utilize geolocation for convenience and accuracy. It could also provide additional information for each organization, providing live updates on resources, occupancy and upcoming events. Furthermore, features could include local and larger scale businesses to contribute towards resource productions (i.e. PPE productions such as masks and hand sanitizer).
This pandemic has been a spark for community solidarity and we hope that it will continue as we begin to recover. Post-pandemic, we hope that this galvanizes continued support for people in need from the members of the community that can provide it.
