Inspiration

Building an app that makes running more accessible and approachable for anyone using music as a tool.

What it does

The app contains training programs that track progress and lead users through a week-by-week schedule using scientific research found online. It allows flexibility for users to build custom runs by either distance or fartlek by inputting a desired distance and pace. During runs, there is a four-second rolling window for cadence calculations that notifies users of their pacing in relation to the intended pace. Additionally, the app tracks a user's career number of runs, time run, and distance covered. Additionally, displays trends for cadence, pace, and distance.

How we built it

After designing a plan and setting up necessary tools, group members used Claude Code, Open Code, and ChatGPT to build and update features as desired.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, the group struggled with learning new parts of GitHub and Node.js, but we were able to adjust and learn as we continued. The group also had to make a trade-off between accuracy and pace of updates for cadence on the user end; however, after experimentation with several options, we landed on the best solution. Additionally, there were difficulties with memory, copyright, and streaming accessibility for the music.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

After initial difficulties with calculation accuracy, we were able to update the cadence trackers by using GPS tracking and the accelerometer. Additionally, we are proud of the integration of live sensor readings from the user's device that displays the dynamic changes as a run is occurring.

What we learned

As a team, we all learned about many aspects of app development, specifically for iOS.

What's next for OnMyBeat

Next steps include adapting the app for connection to Apple Watch as well as integrating outside music platforms (such as Spotify, Apple Music, and/or YouTube Music) into the app for a more personalized user experience.
