Inspiration

Only Up XR was born from a desire to fill a void on the platform: the absence of truly gorgeous, epic worlds that captivate the senses. Inspired by the hauntingly beautiful landscapes and intricate storytelling of Myst, we aimed to create a visually spectacular world that remains accessible to all players. By focusing on a single, universal mechanic—jumping—we sought to evoke the joy of exploration while pushing the limits of immersive storytelling through the Worlds Desktop Editor. Our vision was to craft a universe where every leap feels monumental, blending minimalist gameplay with maximalist visuals to create a modern XR classic.

How We Built It

The world of Only Up XR was constructed almost entirely within the Worlds Desktop Editor, harnessing its native optimization tools to create a visually rich, yet lightweight experience. We leaned heavily on the asset import pipeline to integrate high-fidelity models and textures crafted in Blender, while custom scripting enabled dynamic environments and responsive interaction. The Meta Camera API was pivotal for cinematic storytelling, allowing us to frame vistas and narrative moments with artistic precision.

Challenges

Balancing approachability with engaging difficulty was a significant challenge. Early versions felt either too simplistic or overly punishing, so we conducted frequent playtests to fine-tune jump mechanics and difficulty progression, reducing friction and ensuring a smooth learning curve. Leveraging the Meta Camera API for storytelling required skillful integration to avoid disrupting gameplay flow; we iterated extensively to make camera movements feel natural and immersive. Achieving cross-platform optimization, especially for mobile, demanded rigorous testing to maintain visual fidelity while keeping load times under 30 seconds, a goal we met through careful asset optimization.

We’re thrilled with the aesthetic beauty of Only Up XR, where every island and ruin pulses with artistic detail, enhanced by masterful use of the Meta Camera API to create cinematic, narrative-driven moments. The world’s accessibility and approachability stand out, welcoming players of all backgrounds with intuitive controls and balanced gameplay. Achieving cross-platform optimization—loading in under 30 seconds on mobile while retaining stunning visuals—is a technical feat we’re incredibly proud of. This combination of artistry, inclusivity, and performance makes Only Up XR a standout on the platform.

Next Steps

To elevate Only Up XR, we’re set to showcase it at the Augmented World Expo, highlighting its innovative design to a global audience. We’re hosting in-world events, starting with a competition and AMA on May 14, 2025, at 2 PM PST, Register to build community engagement. Regular updates, including holiday releases and special editions, will introduce new islands, themes, and challenges. By incorporating player feedback and expanding event-driven content, we aim to keep the world vibrant and evolving, ensuring every jump feels fresh and unforgettable.
