Inspiration
We loved the famous game Only Up, and after going through multiple ideas, we landed on this and decided it would be very fun to both play and build our own version of it. So, we decided on doing a Pirate Edition of Only Up.
What it does
Brings an immersive world to the player, and allows him to attempt a tough climb to the top of the world.
How we built it
We heavily utilized all the tools and public assets that were available to us, as well as the remixable worlds and tutorials. Most of all, we used GenAI for creating our own assets and for making a lot of the scripts that we needed.
Challenges we ran into
We had so many challenges, especially in the beginning. Being new to game making and horizon worlds, we had to learn and fail a lot. We kept running into this weird issue where importing some asset into our world would break the players ability to jump, so that was fun (very very not) to deal with.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're so proud of being able to build a pretty immersive world. Manipulating all the assets and adding all the sounds to make the world feel more alive was tough, but turned out so well.
What we learned
We learned a lot about game design. The whole process of starting from nothing and letting creativity run wild, to refining a near finished version. The whole build was a learning process, and we can comfortably say we have a solid understanding of how Meta Horizon Worlds Editor works.
What's next for Straw Hat's Ascent
Considering how much we enjoyed building and expanding on this idea, having more time would allow us to expand the world so much more. Building it higher, adding more interesting aspects and functions to the parkour, adjusting difficulty. There is truly so much we could still add that it would be a waste to stop working just because the competition is coming to a close.
