Inspiration
Only Hands was born from a simple idea: what if your hands alone were the most powerful weapons in a VR arena? Instead of swords, guns, or wands, we wanted to explore the fantasy of pure gesture-based magic, the feeling of conjuring destructive power from thin air. The goal was to create a VR experience where every movement feels meaningful, expressive, and satisfying.
What it does
Only Hands is a fast-paced VR magic action game where players cast spells entirely with hand gestures. You can swipe to create slashes of energy, punch to send shockwaves, or hold and release to fire devastating projectiles.
How we built it
We built Only Hands in Unity with a VR-focused architecture designed for fluid hand tracking and gesture recognition.
- Custom gesture-based spellcasting system
- Optimized shaders and adaptive graphics for stable 60+ FPS on both PCVR and mobile
- Ragdoll and physics interactions for enemy reactions
- Modular combat arenas with destructible elements
Challenges we ran into
- Getting gesture detection to feel natural without accidental triggers
- Maintaining high frame rates despite physics-heavy combat
- Making enemy ragdolls feel fun but not too chaotic
- Balancing spell power so the game feels intense without overwhelming the player
- Ensuring controls feel equally smooth across PC and mobile VR hardware
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A fully functional VR spellcasting system powered only by hand movement
- Visually dynamic arenas with destructible props
What we learned
** Optimization early in development saves huge amounts of rework
What's next for Only Hands
- We plan to expand the experience with:
- More spells (lightning, black hole pulls, chain explosions)
- Additional enemy types with unique behaviors
