Problem

Reading groups, local meetups, special interest groups, etc are in need of decentralised communication web apps where data transparency is very important. Existing competition, are centralized where users are in control of the data that is sold, and mostly unaware what is collected.

Solution

We wrote a decentralized node.js open-source webapp that promotes privacy through no data being collected and sold to advertisers.

What we learned

This is our first ever hackathon, and our first time with this tech stack. We learnt syntax and debugged node.js, web-hosting, and relational databases over 24 hours with using genAI as a tutor only.

What's next for CactiSocial

We want to add higher-standard encryption codes and add password-entry. We want to add distributed optimizations so chat sessions would be self-hosted to scale it to 10-100 users.
