The problem

“You know how we just sign up a big waste services provider to make our rubbish disappear? They just make the problem disappear and I don’t need to think about it. But wait … what’s all this about scope 2 and scope 3 emissions that my board or stakeholders now want me to worry about … what do I do now?” Are you fully prepared for your ESG/Scope 3 reporting, or mandatory climate related financial disclosure reporting? In Australia, like in many other countries, a large amount of waste still ends up in landfills. Even though many materials could be recycled or repurposed, they often don’t reach the right facilities. The traditional waste management system is complex, and coordinating the proper collection, sorting, and recycling of materials can be challenging and inefficient. The market is dominated by large providers who seek to capture the whole vertical … even though they don’t provide all the services. OneCircl was created to tackle these challenges head-on by enabling seamless coordination and logistics for waste producers, logistics providers, recyclers and manufacturers. The secret is to break the long-term contracting model and move to real-time waste stream management with automated matchmaking and contract management. This needs data and management systems that currently do not exist. OneCircl will provide the data and real-time contracting platform to maximise end-to-end material flow efficiency and reduce Scope 3 emissions at every stage. The platform enables enterprise real-time visibility of your waste steams and data on emissions to help bring net-zero to reality. One of the challenges we face is that waste contracting issues with organisations, this limited us for a real time waste contracting with businesses.

How It Works:

Smart Waste Collection:

OneCircl ensure waste is collected and characterised efficiently. Enterprises can schedule waste pickups and audits through the platform, and OneCircl matches the pickup with the nearest available transporter that specialises in the type of waste being collected. Pickup your bins when they’re full … no more shipping air.

Circular Matching:

The platform identifies the best recycling or repurposing options for each type of waste. It uses smart algorithms to match logistics providers, waste producers and the companies that can use the materials in their manufacturing processes, reducing the need for raw materials and closing the loop on waste. No need for long term waste contractors to lock up waste streams.

Digital Waste Dashboard:

Businesses have access to a dashboard that tracks their waste in real-time throughout the cycle. The dashboard provides insights into the amount of waste produced, the types of materials being thrown away, and the environmental impact. This transparency helps businesses make better decisions to reduce their waste, handle their waste, through to procurement of goods made from recycled goods.

Sustainability Partnerships:

OneCircl collaborates with local governments, recycling companies, and logistics partners to create a seamless network. These partnerships make it easier to find innovative ways to repurpose waste, like turning coffee grounds into biofuel or using plastics in new products. The visibility on local waste streams leads to local circularity and further emission reductions.

hypotheses

There is a strong demand for waste collection and recycling services that utilise digital platforms for optimisation and transparency. We are going to map out the current business process and its contract process int the sector, and we turn it into business process map (we need business analyst), then use it as a part of software development. We are talking to 2 businesses in the Hunter for a small scale pilot(3-6months, allow data collecting and testing) to test the adoption rate of the digital platform for waste collection services. Data Analysis: Track key metrics such as user engagement, frequency of waste collection requests, and feedback from pilot participants. If successful: scale the service: expand the digital platform to other regions, Australia and aim to become a number 1 global second material tracking platform. We are looking partnerships with municipalities and local waste processing companies to enhance service delivery. Then refinement: continue improving the platform based on new user feedback and market trends.

The Impact:

OneCircl is changing the way waste is managed in Australia by making circular waste management simple, efficient, and transparency to everyone. Our application provides businesses with observability across the end-to-end waste cycle, with easy to digest information using a suite of dashboards and reporting options available at their fingertips. Compare locations and waste streams, track savings, and comply with regulations including Scope 3 CO2 emissions and sustainability reporting.

Future Plans:

OneCircl has a place based approach linking businesses with logistics and recycler, we plan to stability MVP in the Hunter region, then expand its platform across Australia, bringing its innovative waste management solutions to more cities and communities. The focus will be on using more advanced data analytics and AI to predict waste patterns and create even more efficient recycling solutions. OneCircl also aims to build more partnerships with businesses to make the circular economy the standard for waste management. The product will require a real-time cloud data service for users and will include portal with dashboards and reporting functions for enterprise, logistics providers, waste recyclers, and manufacturers. This will create a curated and automated marketplace/exchange where waste streams are identified and tracked, contracts are exchanged and monitored, and emissions and value is made visible. A no-code/low-code platform is being considered for MVP development though integrations with third party applications will involve APIs for two way data exchange to automate business processes where possible.
The work will be completed by our team on a part-time basis due to other work commitments. This has been taken into account in planning workload and scope. In particular, the following work roles will be undertaken: Annie Jiang - will take the lead on mapping, business development, stakeholder engagement and will development of user cases and business process maps. Annie will also manage legal contractor for development of contracts suited to the MVP. Andrew Mears - will support technology choices and will development of MVP technology aspects. A UX Designer contractor will be recruited as part of the eligible expenditure to prototype the UI. TBC - will support customer interviews and testing

What essential outcomes will you generate during your testing phase?

Further development of use cases and business process maps validated with customer testing Suite of legal contracts for each key stakeholder Prototype of UX for usability testing Functioning MVP with software front end and hybrid manual/software back-end

The Team:

Annie Jiang is an entrepreneur and a leading expert in Circular Economy. Annie has identified the need for organisations to know where their waste goes, and how to reduce Scope 3 emissions at every stage. This drove her to create OneCircl, which enables an enterprise real-time visibility of their waste steams through data on emissions to help bring net-zero to reality. Annie also founded Hunter based circular economy advisory company Go Circular, and she brings her extensive domain and leadership experience and will be CEO for the venture. Andrew Mears PhD is a serial tech entrepreneur and climate change expert with 25+ years’ experience in Australia and globally. This includes in senior roles in corporate, academic and multi-national enterprises developing projects and strategy for renewable energy, climate change and environmental benefit. Dr Mears was previously chief technical advisor on climate change and renewable energy for UN and World Bank in APAC and Africa. Most recently he founded the Newcastle-based clean tech company SwitchDin. Andrew is interim CTO of OneCirl. We missed the pre-submission matchmaking sessions and are looking for other team member ... preferably in Software and another a Business Analyst.
