Inspiration

In communities across the globe, people facing mental health challenges, disabilities, housing insecurity, food insecurity, transportation barriers, and other difficult life circumstances that often need immediate support. However, when individuals are in stressful or overwhelming situations, it can be difficult to clearly communicate their needs, navigate available resources, or determine which services are actually relevant to them. While the internet has made information more accessible than ever, it has also created a new problem: information overload. People are frequently presented with hundreds of resources, websites, phone numbers, and assistance programs, forcing them to spend valuable time searching for help rather than receiving it, further adding to their stress.

We were inspired to create OneCall Hotline because we believe finding help should be as simple as making a phone call not only to search for resources but also for emotional support. Instead of requiring users to navigate dozens of websites or understand complex eligibility requirements, we wanted to create a single point of access that could understand an individual's situation and guide them toward the most appropriate resources in real time with empathy and warmth.

What it does

OneCall Hotline is an AI-powered voice hotline that connects individuals with personalized community resources through a simple phone call.

When a user calls the hotline at +1 860-485-7151, they speak naturally with an AI voice agent that gathers important contextual information such as their location, age, language preference, and the challenges they are facing. Rather than overwhelming users with every possible resource, the system analyzes their circumstances and identifies the services and assistance programs that best match their needs.

The agent can help users find resources related to housing, food assistance, healthcare, transportation, legal aid, disability support, mental health services, and more. It provides relevant contact information, explains next steps, answers follow up questions, and repeats important details whenever necessary. The system also supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, and Mandarin, allowing it to serve diverse communities without sacrificing response quality. Most importantly, it speaks with a humanity that creates comfort whilst searching for help, allowing the user to feel more hopeful and calm.

How we built it

We built OneCall Hotline using a combination of conversational AI, voice technologies, and real time resource retrieval systems.

The voice experience is powered by an AI voice agent that can conduct natural conversations over the phone. Incoming calls are processed through a telephony platform and routed to our conversational AI system, which analyzes user requests and extracts relevant contextual information. We developed logic that evaluates factors such as location and service relevance to determine which resources are most appropriate for each caller.

To ensure users receive actionable information rather than generic recommendations, we integrated resource search capabilities that allow the system to retrieve and organize local assistance programs based on the caller's specific circumstances. The backend manages conversation memory, allowing the agent to retain important details throughout the interaction and provide a more natural, personalized experience.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing comprehensiveness with simplicity. There are countless assistance programs and community services available, but presenting too much information can overwhelm users, especially when they are already in stressful situations. We had to carefully design the system to prioritize the most relevant resources while keeping conversations concise and easy to follow.

Another challenge was ensuring the AI could effectively understand callers who may be emotional, anxious, uncertain about their needs, or unfamiliar with the services available to them. People rarely describe their situations using perfect terminology, so the system needed to infer intent and guide conversations in a supportive and structured manner. However, this is also something that AI can solve better than even human hotlines themselves, making this solution uniquely powerful.

We also faced challenges related to multilingual support, resource categorization, and ensuring that information remained accurate and useful across different geographic regions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a solution that makes community assistance significantly more accessible through a familiar and universally available technology: a phone call.

Instead of requiring users to download an app, create an account, or search through websites, OneCall Hotline allows anyone with access to a phone to receive personalized guidance in seconds. We are also proud of our ability to provide context aware recommendations rather than generic resource lists, helping users find the services most relevant to their specific situations.

Additionally, we successfully implemented multilingual support and conversational memory, enabling the system to serve a broader population while maintaining a more human centered and sympathetic user experience through dynamic conversational tone.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned that access to information is not the same as access to help. Even when resources exist, individuals often struggle to navigate them during moments of stress, uncertainty, or crisis. We discovered the importance of simplifying complex systems and presenting information in a way that is immediately actionable.

We also gained valuable experience in conversational AI design and voice interfaces that account for the difficulties of dealing with a panicked user. We understood that building these voice systems must balance personalization and accuracy to appropriately guide the user when they struggle to communicate. In that way it acts as more than just a search engine or a chatbot, rather it acts as a companion during a difficult time. Most importantly, we learned that technology can be most impactful when it removes barriers between people and the support they need.

What's next for OneCall Hotline

Our vision for OneCall Hotline extends far beyond a single hotline.

In the future, we plan to expand our resource database, increase language support, and improve personalization through deeper eligibility analysis and smarter recommendation systems. We also want to introduce proactive follow up capabilities, allowing the system to check in with users after providing resources and help them stay connected with support services.

Additionally, we hope to partner with nonprofits, community organizations, healthcare providers, and government agencies to improve resource coverage and ensure users receive the most accurate and up to date information possible.

Ultimately, our goal is to create a nationwide support network where anyone, regardless of their background, language, or circumstances, can access meaningful practical and emotional assistance through a single phone call.
