Inspiration
Today, a lot of food is being wasted. Food distribution is inefficient; those that can afford to buy a lot of food often times end up having a surplus that doesn't always get redistributed to those who really need it. On the college campus, food is a topic students are constantly thinking about. Students are constantly looking to minimize their food costs while maximizing their food intake. Student organizations love to use free food as a way to attract potential new recruits; communication (and therefore the effectiveness in which food is distributed), however, is completely up to each organization.
Our team wanted to create an app that would address what we saw as the core problem behind this issue: lack of effective communication. We wanted to create a platform that helped people become aware of free and low-cost food opportunities in their area, while also allowing those with a surplus to have a place to easily redistribute it. We also realized that such a platform will help vendors/organizations to promote and increase their traffic flow.
What it does
Users input details about either events with food or personal food sales. Others can find the event's details such as event title, location, price range, and type of food.
How we built it
We used Expo to create a iOS/Android app with React Native and Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
We had very little experience with JavaScript coming into SDHacks. On top of this, none of us had any experience with app development. Throughout the hackathon, we had countless issues, but were able to get help from the mentors to solve most of them.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Implementing a database, having a functional app, the whole thing.
What we learned
JavaScript, Expo, React Native, Firebase
What's next for OneByte
Rating system of events (thumbs up/down), sorting system (by location, price, rating, type of food), Camera function to upload photos of event/food provided.
