Inspiration

A great team is what everyone dreams to have. However, it is always a struggle to find the right group that aligns with your passion and skill sets. It was lucky for us that we met each other almost an hour before the Hackathon. Before that, it was a mere struggle to ask everyone at the Hackathon “who seem to not have a team” if we could join them. It turned out to be an awesome learning experience for us, just because we found each other at the right time, but it might not be the same for everyone. Wouldn't it be awesome if we had a platform for the Hackathon where we could connect with other participants, see their skill sets, and ask them to join or create the ONE team? We believe that the One Team platform would increase the interest of those participants who did not formerly have a team and encourage them to participate in the Hackathons.

What it does

Hackers can create a profile that includes their skill sets, their contact information, and other basic information like their Major. Anyone who would like to form a team or join an incomplete team can create a profile and connect with participants before the Hackathon. Participants can see who needs a team and who is forming a team. This allows anyone to contact members whom they think can form their dream team.

How we built it

We chose React as our frontend framework and Firebase as our backend framework. We first discussed the structure of the web pages and their relationships. Then we could split them into different React components, which made the code more organized. On the backend, we implemented the login and signup authentication logic using the Firebase APIs. To reduce the time spent on Designing, we utilized the Tailwind UI library to help beautify our web pages.

Challenges we ran into

This was the first hackathon experience for all of us. Even though we all were CS majors, we had never created a useful product capable of interacting with users. The major part of our struggle was learning React, Firebase API, and Tailwind CSS, a completely new set of tools for us. Reading and writing data to the database, configuring authentication, and passing the user data between components were also the hardest parts to implement in the project. The greatest challenge outside of our skillsets is that this is our first time coding as a team, so we had to learn how to make use of different features of Git and GitHub such as pull requests and merge. Despite the beginning struggle, we managed to find more comfort in working as a team.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Even though we were barely familiar with all those technical tools like Firebase, React, and Tailwind, we were able to learn them from Scratch and build something meaningful that has the potential of getting implemented not just in Hackathons, but also in other competitions where you can participate as a team. In just 36 hours, we were able to bring our ideas from our mind and whiteboard to a functioning website, something we all had never thought we could do in just a day.

What we learned

Basically EVERYTHING. Besides those aforementioned technical tools, we learned an important lesson: we can achieve our greatest potential when we find the right team.

What's next for One Team

We do not want to limit this platform to just a corner of a github repository. We want it out in the world, creating an impact. Our team plans to customize the website, add more appropriate features like administrator login, in-website chats, current status, etc. Just like we were able to find our passion and potential after working with our team, we believe that everyone can do the same, but in a more easier way with the help of One Team.
