About One Tap Away 2.0: The new and improved laundry app for Yale students
To start off this project, we first needed to learn and reflect more about the laundry situation at Yale. We began by asking friends their thoughts and opinions before sitting down and adding our own to the list. One of the first ideas we wanted to pursue was making a device that could sense the vibrations of a washer and dryer. This data would be sent to the new app, which would use the data to let people know machine availability. However, we considered the cost of powering the sensor through an arduino (or something of that style), and the upkeep, and ultimately decided that this option was not cost-effective.
Therefore, we moved towards the idea of improving the current laundry app. We designed to target specific issues such as long wait times and lack of communication about laundry, arriving at our final product. Many of the new features of the app were inspired by already-existing features across different apps. For example, we took the idea of “student chat,” from Fizz. Moreover, we also took inspiration from google maps for the feature that displays popularity times. One of the major challenges we faced was the learning curve with using figma and creating our own icons and app layout. However, we were able to utilize guides to familiarize ourselves with the system.
