Inspiration
I've always loved personal development, but I wanted to test and set up so many things at once that I started feeling overwhelmed. Getting challenges at random turned out to be a good way for me to actually test them one at a time, instead of trying to tackle everything at once. I aimed to complete at least one a day, which helped me keep a steady rhythm. I started by keeping a simple Excel list of challenge and habit ideas. I eventually realized that list deserved to become a living, daily experience rather than a static spreadsheet.
What it does
ONE STEP gives you 1 to 5 random challenges ("steps") every day, drawn from a catalog of 300+. You can create your own custom challenges. Premium users can unlock AI-generated steps tailored to their profile. The challenges span categories like health, money, relationships, productivity, and everyday life. Each step takes between 5 to 60 minutes, and it's good for you or for the people around you. You stay in full control: you can complete a step, skip it, or blacklist it forever. If you love a step, you can turn it into a recurring habit. Streaks, trophies, and gentle notifications keep you motivated.
How we built it
I built the app in Flutter for cross-platform iOS and Android. I used Firebase as the backend. I integrated RevenueCat to handle subscriptions for the premium tier. The app was built AI-native: I largely "vibe coded" it using Cursor and Claude. Gemini powers the in-app feature that generates personalized steps for premium users. I sourced the initial 300+ challenges myself through research, books, and social media, then expanded and deduplicated the catalog using a custom Claude skill that runs parallel sub-agents by category. I designed the visual identity — the mascot, category icons, and streak progression — in Midjourney using a custom style reference, then cleaned everything up in Photopea.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was time, since I built this solo alongside a full-time job. I had to scope the project strictly and lay out every step before diving in. The product vision kept evolving as I built it. Art direction was the hardest part for me, since I'm a pretty analytical profile and color and UX decisions sat well outside my comfort zone.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud that the app works end to end today. I believe it can genuinely help people discover new things and ease into personal development. For a solo-built V0, it already feels close to the product I originally set out to build.
What we learned
I learned a lot about product and design, both of which were new territory for me. I learned how to manage a solo project, since new obstacles kept showing up at every stage and I had to find ways around them. It was as much a lesson in persistence as it was in building.
What's next for One step - One random challenge a day
Marketing and communication are new territory for me, since my day job is Sales Ops rather than growth, so I'm approaching this next chapter as something to learn deliberately.
