Inspiration

Children of color often experience a lack of representation reflected in books they encounter in school. Too often books about race and racism are banned or challenged by parents or community members because they thought of promoting Critical Race Theory, saying that race is a societal problem. This inspired us to push back a bit and give racial literacy books another home. Along with sharing global stories and the issues faced in different cultures.

What it does

This site would be a resource for people to have access to books not taught in schools and will come with resources to have a dialogue with your children or anyone else from who this knowledge would benefit. It also has a global section to share literature from authors around the world that want to educate others about their culture. We plan to have these books as e-books to tackle the issue of sustainability and not make someone's location a hinder to access to books. Each book also comes with it's own brief discussion guide to help facilitate dialogue.

How we built it

We used the features in Velo by Wix to build the main website. Alone with google to research the type of content we wanted to include.

Challenges we ran into

Connecting Twilio to our Forum, Connecting Auth0 for sign up. Connecting our customized domain name to Wix. All of these were because we don't have a premium account.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our end product. We had a strong connection to the issue we wanted to solve and wanted to share its importance in one form or another. Thus we are proud of continuing to work through problems and finding workarounds.

What we learned

We learned how to use Wix as this was some of our teammate's first time. We also learned how to use Twilio and Auth0. We also learned about the importance of design thinking and took tips from workshops to improve our idea.

What's next for One Page at a Time

Next, we hope to roll out some more features. We hope to fix the problems with Twilio and Auth0. Along with developing our business model, looking at a subscription model and renting at cheaper price options. Sustainability was a big part of our brainstorming and we hope to look at a way to give back to environment groups if we do start selling physical copies of books.
