Inspiration
My wife and I sometimes have a hard time spending time together without checking our phones. Especially with two young children, we're often tired, and it's very easy to pull the phone instead of spending quality time together. So we thought about creating an app where we intentionally create a moment to spend time together without checking our phones.
What it does
The app lets you connect with your partner, select the apps you want to block, and then one of you can create a moment. Before the moment starts, you can send each other doodles (there's even a widget to display the last one). When the moment starts, apps on both phones are automatically blocked. When the moment ends, the couple can take a picture of themselves as a memory. Then each user can check their calendar and see how many moments they've had together (with their photos), which is always a nice feeling.
How we built it
I'm an experienced iOS developer, so I started by brainstorming the idea with my wife.
Initially, we wanted to be able to create a solo moment (me time), a moment with your partner, and a moment with your friends/family, but after doing some research, we decided to focus on couples only for now, as there's definitely a market for couples apps, solo apps are saturated, and we were not so sure about the friends/family niche for app-blocking apps.
Every person we talked to about it said they would use it, which was a very strong signal (even though they may not pay for it, of course).
I developed the app in 2 weeks, then we ran a TestFlight with friends and family for 1 week.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was to make the app easy to use for the users, and also easy for the partner to join, because most of the time, one person in the couple will want to use the app, and the other might be a bit more reluctant, so if, on top of that, the app is complicated to set up, we'll lose a lot of users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
My wife had the idea of the photo at the end of a moment, which I think is super nice and adds an emotional outcome to the moment spent together. Same with the calendar, it's really nice to see all the moments you were able to make with your partner.
All in all, we believe this app has a lot of emotional potential.
What we learned
Because nowadays the best way to promote an app is via UGC content, we tried to create as many shareable screens in the app as possible to make it easier to promote the app (e.g., share a moment with a photo, share a weekly/monthly/yearly calendar of your moments).
Having an app with two users also increases our chances of being shared with more people by our users.
What's next for One More Time
We just launched and want to promote it on TikTok/Instagram in October, then what would make the most sense is to develop an Android version, if we want to reach more couples.
