Inspiration

One of our team members has a loved one, her grandma, who suffers from memory impairment. She often says that it’s difficult to hold anything other than a surface level conversation. All of the memory and brain activity apps that she’s tried haven’t felt motivating or encouraging, just strenuous repetitive sentences every time. it’s also hard to repeat the sentences, while not hearing a voice to assist you in the process. We want our app to make this journey easier and more joyous for her and everyone else who suffers from this issue one smile at a time.

What it does

Our application gives the users a daily goal to remember a joke, which shows up at the start of the day. Throughout the day notifications will be sent to the user, reminding them to tell the joke. To tell the joke there are 2 options- users can either type in their goal through text or contact an AI chatbot through a phonecall(Teli.AI). If the users are able to remember a joke, they’ll get a message congratulating them for their success and laughing at their joke. If their memory needs to be jogged, both AI and the text versions provide a hint for the user(if they still can’t remember they just tell the joke).

How we built it

We built the app in VS code using expogo, react native(UI code), expo for runtime, expo router for file base navigation and node.js files. Our main language was Typescript.

Challenges we ran into

We were a little short in time. We have a lot more components we wanted to incorporate, such as visual hints, a progress page which users can track and even an online community where people with memory issues can tell each other the jokes and make each other laugh

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Incorporating Teli.Ai into our project and creating a very encouraging guide for our users throughout this difficult journey

What we learned

It’s hard to fit every goal in a day, especially since we’re beginner level. But by supporting one another and staying up all night, we were able to achieve the main goal of our app, creating a fun and supportive platform for people with memory impairment. We hope to get experience out of this and go into future challenges with the same determination- because striving towards your goal is one of the most important things a person can do.

What's next for One More Smile

We want to incorporate all new elements into our application, which I talked about above(such as visual hints and etc). We want to spread the word on our app, possibly contacting nursing homes and hospitals. We want to make our app easily accessible and take the user’s tgought into consideration for future improvements.
