Inspiration

When people feel depleted, reaching out can feel harder than it should. Many wellbeing products keep attention inside the app through content, tracking, or chat. We wanted to build something that helps a person leave the screen and take one small step toward someone who matters.

What it does

One Good Reach is a private daily mobile ritual:

  1. Check in with Soul, Mind, and Body.
  2. Choose a person who matters.
  3. Receive one safe action designed to take about five minutes.
  4. Prepare an editable message or conversation.
  5. Reconnect in real life.
  6. Mark the action complete and reflect privately.

Actions include gratitude, checking in, making an invitation, asking for support, and preparing a repair. The app does not try to become the user's companion. It helps the user move from technology back into a human relationship.

How we built it

One Good Reach is built with Expo React Native, strict TypeScript, and Expo Router. Screens call service interfaces for local data, recommendations, profile state, and purchases.

Personal check-ins, labels, messages, and reflections are stored on the device with AsyncStorage. A pure safety gate runs before action generation. The recommendation engine is bounded and local, combining Soul, Mind, and Body ratings with recent history to choose an appropriate action template. Private notes do not need to leave the device.

RevenueCat is integrated through react-native-purchases to manage offerings, the Premium entitlement, purchase state, and restoration. The production path uses an Expo development or store build with the Android public SDK key.

Privacy and safety

One Good Reach has no public profiles, community feed, address-book access, or automatic message sending. It is a wellbeing and relationship-support tool, not therapy, diagnosis, crisis care, or an AI companion. If crisis language is detected, the normal recommendation flow stops and the app redirects to a safety screen.

RevenueCat and monetization

The model is freemium. The core daily check-in, one safe reconnection action, safety routing, and useful personal history remain available without payment. Premium is designed for deeper pattern insights, additional guided reconnection journeys, and more choice in action formats.

A subscription fits the recurring value of an ongoing relationship practice, while a free trial lets users experience the complete loop before paying. We do not monetize private emotional data or place safety behind a paywall.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest product decision was restraint. It would have been easy to add open-ended AI chat, a social feed, gamified streaks, or automatic message sending. Each would make the app look busier while weakening the central idea. We instead kept the flow linear, private, and focused on one real-world action.

Technically, we also separated purchase logic from the UI so the app can run in a safe preview mode during development while using real RevenueCat offerings and entitlements in Android builds.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • A complete check-in to action to reflection vertical slice
  • Private, local-first storage for sensitive content
  • RevenueCat purchase, restore, offering, and entitlement integration
  • A safety gate that cannot be skipped by an asynchronous race
  • A calm visual language without feeds, rankings, or streak pressure
  • 19 passing Jest tests, strict TypeScript, ESLint, and 18 of 18 Expo Doctor checks

What we learned

Relationship technology can be valuable without pretending to be a relationship. The best role for the app is to reduce the activation energy of reaching out, then get out of the way.

We also learned that privacy can shape the product itself. Keeping notes local and using bounded recommendations makes the experience more trustworthy and keeps the engineering aligned with the product promise.

What's next

Next steps include deeper private pattern insights, more guided reconnection journeys, accessibility testing on a wider range of Android devices, and careful user research on which prompts most often lead to meaningful real-world contact.

Award fit

RevenueCat Peace Prize

One Good Reach was designed to create social good at the scale of one relationship at a time. It turns a private emotional check-in into a small, achievable act of gratitude, care, invitation, support, or repair with a real person. Its purpose is not to keep people talking to technology. It is to help them take a safer first step back toward one another.

RevenueCat Design Award

The design treats reconnection as a calm private ritual rather than a productivity contest. Warm ivory surfaces, coral and aubergine accents, rounded organic forms, generous spacing, and clear adult typography create a sense of safety without becoming clinical. The paired reaching forms in the app icon express the product idea in one symbol: two people moving toward a shared point of connection.

HAMM Award

RevenueCat powers the Premium entitlement, offerings, purchase flow, and restoration. The monetization model protects the useful daily core while reserving deeper ongoing value for subscribers.
