Inspiration

Our inspiration stemmed from observing individuals who are unaware of the importance of routine screenings, particularly those who only visit doctors when they experience symptoms. Many people are unaware that certain screenings, which are vital for early detection, may be necessary as they age. Timely screenings can be the difference between identifying a condition early enough to treat it or discovering it too late for effective intervention. Our goal is to eliminate this misinformation and provide an easy-to-use solution for individuals across all age groups, genders, and demographics.

What it does

We developed OncoCheck, a platform designed to offer personalized cancer screening recommendations based on an individual’s health history and demographic information. Users can input their relevant health details and receive a tailored list of screenings they should undergo. The platform also provides information on local clinics, allowing users to schedule screenings directly. In addition, users can view screenings sorted by their relative importance and add them to their personal calendar to stay on top of recurring screenings, such as pap smears, ensuring they never miss an important appointment.

How we built it

OncoCheck was built using a combination of React, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. These technologies allowed us to create an interactive and responsive web application that delivers a seamless user experience.

Challenges we ran into

As relative beginners in web development, we faced a number of challenges throughout the project. One major obstacle was our ambition to integrate an API that would link specific symptoms to relevant screenings, which we struggled to connect. As a result, we manually entered conditions into the platform. Additionally, we had aspirations to incorporate an AI feature that could interact with users, answering questions about screening costs and offering advice, but we were unable to implement it within the time frame.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite our challenges, we are proud of the user-friendly and functional website we built, especially considering our limited experience. We are particularly pleased with the "Add to Calendar" feature, which enables users to set reminders for their screenings. Ultimately, we are proud of the important issue our project addresses—ensuring people are proactive about their health and don’t miss crucial screenings that could make the difference between life and death.

What we learned

Through this project, we gained valuable experience in React and JavaScript. We also enhanced our skills in front-end design, learning how to add stylistic elements to improve the overall user experience. These lessons will be invaluable as we continue to develop our skills in web development.

What's next for OncoCheck

Looking ahead, we envision expanding OncoCheck to mobile platforms, offering users an even more convenient and accessible way to manage their screenings. We also plan to implement text reminders and push notifications to ensure users stay on top of upcoming appointments. Additionally, we aim to establish partnerships with cancer screening initiatives and local clinics, particularly those offering low-cost screenings, to expand our outreach and make the platform more accessible to underserved communities.
